Man does not live by bread alone

Bread in the proverb stands for the material necessities of life and not just the food. Such things as clothing and shelter are the other necessities. But a man cannot survive by these things alone. A man who devotes his time and talents exclusively for the gratification of his physical needs is no better than the irrational animal species around him. He cannot remain indifferent to the urges of his mind, the yearnings of his heart, and the cravings of his soul. The intellectual, emotional, and spiritual aspects of his life are as much significant as the physical aspect.
