Science in Everyday Life
Science has an armed man with
inventions that are no less than miracles, and the greatest of these inventions
is electricity. It is the wonder of wonders. It cooks, washes, lights, and
warms. It is the handmaid of all that we do in our homes. It is also used as a
motive force in factories. The electric cranes lift heavy loads. The fans, the
air-conditioners, the refrigerators all work with the help of electricity. The
radio, the television, the printing press, the cinema, and the tube-well work
because there is electricity.
Science is indeed a blessing. The
railways, the motor car, and the airplane provide us with a swift means of
communication and travel. The invention of modern transportation has made
travel places in a very short time. The conquest of space is another feather in
the cap of man.
Then there is the telegraph, the
telephone, and the wireless. A wonderful new invention called cellular phones
helps us to make and receive calls from almost anywhere. The radio and music
systems have made the dull life at home bright. Television, the latest
development of wireless telegraphy, enables people to see pictures as well as
hear the speaker.
Science has revolutionized our means
of transport. We do not use bullock carts or carriages. They are too slow a
means of transport for a man of the twenty-first century. We have bicycles,
motor cars, trains, ships, airplanes, and they are all the gifts of science.
Science has reduced the distance between the country. People residing in
distant places are our next-door neighbors.
Science has helped in the field of
medicine and surgery and man to fight against diseases. Diseases like the
plague, smallpox, cholera, typhoid malaria, etc., have been brought under
control. Anesthesia helps men not to feel pain during operations. Almost every
part of the body can be replaced.
Another wonderful gift of science is
computers. Today computers have acquired an important place in almost every
aspect of our lives. They are used in medicine, weather predictions,
communication, air traffic control, hospitals, offices, super bazaars, etc. A
world system of interconnected networks providing almost universal computer
access called the internet is the latest gift of science.
Science has thus entered every walk of
our life. It has even changed our outlook on life and we have started thinking
in a scientific way.
Scientific inventions have not only
been good for our life but have some bad effects also. Many deadly weapons of
warfare were invented. The long-range missiles, poisonous gases, atom bombs,
and many other destructive weapons have made the life of man insecure. Another
war and the whole world will the destroyed in minutes. In short, science is a
mixed blessing.
